6 Basic Home Maintenance Tasks Every Homeowner Should Know

Owning and caring for a home is a big responsibility. Although certain repairs should be conducted by a professional, there are several maintenance jobs that you can handle on your own. To help you with the task, we’ve compiled six basic home maintenance tasks every homeowner should know!

Fix Leaky Faucets

If your faucet is leaky, there’s no need to call a plumber. A little DIY can fix the issue. Shut off the water to the sink and plug the drain using a rag, so no small parts fall down the drain as you take apart the faucet. If you have a compression faucet, you’ll probably need a new rubber washer to seal the valve. If you have a dripping washerless faucet, it can usually be fixed by installing a new O-ring. Unclog the Sink

If you have a clogged sink and chemical drain cleaners just aren’t working, the issue is probably a blocked P-trap. You can quickly check this U-shaped pipe under the sink by first placing a bucket underneath it and then unscrewing the pipe. Once inside, use a wire coat hanger or a large nylon bottle brush to unclog any debris. If you take everything apart and find that the trap is clean and clear, work a small retractable drain snake directly in the pipe in the wall by rotating it clockwise, and your clog should be fixed! Then reassemble the trap.

Replace Electrical Outlets

Is it time to replace your electrical outlets? No need to call an electrician. First, cut the power and use a voltage tester to ensure no electricity is running through them. Next, remove the faceplate, unscrew the outlet, and note which wires connect to which outlet. Connect the new outlet, screw it into place, and turn the electricity back on to ensure everything works.

Clean Your Sump Pump

Sump pumps protect your basement from flooding and help keep your belongings safe from water damage. Although sump pumps are crucial to protecting your home, most homeowners forget about them altogether. However, if you want your sump pump to run effectively, it should be cleaned once or twice a year. Begin by switching off the power or unplugging it. Then remove the sump pump from its hole and take it outside. Hose it off and remove any caked-on debris. Drain any water from the hole with a shop vac, and then put the pump back once it is thoroughly dry.

Replace the furnace filter

Maximize your furnace efficiency to minimize your utility bill! It’s actually quick and easy to do. Simply change your furnace filter every two months. First, select the right filter for your model, turn off your furnace, and remove the service panel. Then swap out the old filter for the new one. Since each furnace is different, consult your manual before you begin.

Clean the Gutters

A clogged gutter can cause leaks in your roof or water damage to the interior or exterior of your home. Yikes! Plus, clogged gutters make lovely homes for pests, rodents, and mould. Yuck! Luckily, cleaning your gutter at least once a year isn’t hard to do. You can get a ladder and remove the debris by hand. Just make sure to use a stabilizer for extra safety. If ladders aren’t your thing, you can still get the job done by buying a special attachment for your leaf blower or wet-dry vac.

By mastering these simple home maintenance tasks, you’ll avoid headaches, or worse, spending big money to fix the issue! Plus, you’ll get to feel proud of a job well done. Did you enjoy our tips? If so, don’t forget to read more on the SkyHomes blog!
